FAQ

  • What is the goal of the Medicine Plus Mindset training?
The overall goal of the Medicine Plus Mindset training is to make your work as a healthcare team member more efficient, effective, and enjoyable. By understanding, identifying, and shaping patient mindsets regularly as part of your practice, you can make the treatment you deliver more effective and the work you do more fulfilling.
  • How did you develop the Medicine Plus Mindset training?
The Medicine Plus Mindset Training content is based on decades of research from medicine, psychology, behavioral economics, and neuroscience. Drawing from Dr. Alia Crum’s own research in the field of health psychology for over 15 years, Dr. Crum & Dr. Leibowitz developed the training to help care teams harness the power of mindset in their clinical practice. The format and structure of the training draw from best practices in psychology and education. It was developed in collaboration with physicians and other medical practitioners at Stanford University, subject to review by experts in medicine and psychology, and pilot-tested with several clinics in Stanford Healthcare before its initial delivery to all of Stanford Primary Care as part of their Primary Care 2.0 initiative.

  • What will we learn in the Medicine Plus Mindset training?
The Medicine Plus Mindset training will provide a language, framework, and strategies for shaping patient mindsets in clinical practice to improve their healthcare experience and health outcomes. The training provides an overview of the ways mindsets influence patient health outcomes, specific mindsets to look out for in the clinic, and strategies for shaping patients’ mindsets in clinical practice.
  • Is the Medicine Plus Mindset training just for physicians?
NO! The Medicine Plus Mindset training is designed for all members of the care team and all employees at the clinic. This can include physicians, medical assistants, clinic directors, front desk staff, schedulers, behavioral health specialists, pharmacists, scribes, or anyone else who works in the clinic in any capacity. Everyone on the care team has the power and responsibility to shape patient mindsets, and care team members in non-physician roles often find the training especially useful for their jobs. After going through the training, one medical assistant commented that the training “has given me the opportunity to be part of a healing process for our patients.”
  • Who is the Medicine Plus Mindset training for?
The Medicine Plus Mindset Training was designed with Primary Care, Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine care teams in mind, and many of the examples relate to common chronic illnesses or situations seen in these specialties. If you are in a medical specialty other than Primary Care, Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine and wondering if the Medicine Plus Mindset Training is right for you, please reach out to us using our contact form for more information or to discuss customization.
  • Who delivers the Medicine Plus Mindset training?
The Medicine Plus Mindset Training is delivered by Alia Crum, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Stanford University and Principle Investigator of the Stanford Mind & Body Lab, and by Kari Leibowitz, PhD, a health psychologist and head of the Stanford Mind & Body Lab’s medical training programs. • What is the format of the Medicine Plus Mindset training?
The Medicine Plus Mindset training consists of two 1-hour video sessions. These video sessions can be completed at weekly or monthly team meetings or over several lunch-and-learn gatherings. The sessions are designed to be completed one week to one month apart. This interval will give team members time to put lessons from session 1 into practice before moving on to session 2. The video sessions also contain interactive exercises, reflections, and discussions. This gives care team members an opportunity to participate and apply insights from the Medicine Plus Mindset training to their own practice and experience, and to share their thoughts and reflections with others on their team.
